About
The Snow Survey Cabin offers a rustic backcountry experience on Wyoming's Snowy Range at nearly 10,000 feet elevation. This one-room cabin sleeps up to four people on two sets of bunk beds and comes equipped with a propane cook stove and heater, solar lights, table and chairs, and basic cooking utensils including plates, cups, pots, and pans. There is no indoor plumbing or running water; a vault toilet is located outside and guests must bring their own water supply. The cabin is available year-round, though winter access requires parking at the closure gate and traveling via snowmobile, skis, or snowshoes. The lower Ryan Park Snowmobile Parking Area is 6 miles from the cabin, while the upper chains-end gate is approximately 1 mile away depending on Wyoming Highway Department closures. Recreational opportunities abound in all seasons. Summer brings access to an extensive hiking trail system including Medicine Bow Peak at 12,013 feet, plus fishing at numerous alpine lakes and streams. Winter transforms the area into a playground for snowmobilers and cross-country skiers. Wildlife viewing is excellent, with elk, deer, moose, and occasional black bears inhabiting the surrounding forest.
