About

Located along Crooked Creek Lake in western Pennsylvania's Armstrong County, Damsite and Spillway Recreation Area is part of a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers flood control project completed in 1940. The lake and its scenic shoreline provide diverse water-based recreation opportunities in a setting of rolling hills just 30 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. The recreation area features several picnic areas maintained by the Corps with tables and charcoal grills, plus six picnic shelters. A sandy peninsula beach attracts swimmers and sunbathers, while a boat launch with ample trailer parking serves boating and waterskiing enthusiasts. Anglers are drawn to the lake's abundant fish populations, including bass, muskie, sunfish, and crappie. Between the pavilions is a restroom facility with flush toilets and running water. Crooked Creek Lake serves multiple purposes beyond recreation, including flood protection for the lower Allegheny and Ohio rivers and water supply for downstream communities. The 141-mile Baker Trail crosses the lake on its course through western Pennsylvania, and the nearby Crooked Creek Environmental Learning Center offers environmental education programs. The lake is managed under Title 36 of the Code of Federal Regulations.
