About
Located in the Virginia Kendall Unit of Cuyahoga Valley National Park, the Ledges and Octagon picnic shelters are historic structures built by the Civilian Conservation Corps using American chestnut and locally quarried sandstone. Both fully-accessible shelters are situated near Ritchie Ledges, an area featuring approximately 2 miles of Sharon conglomerate stone cliffs about 30 feet tall. The Ledges Shelter accommodates up to 75 people and includes two fireplaces, eight indoor picnic tables, eight tables in an outside pavilion, and a large grill. The Octagon Shelter holds up to 50 people and features seven indoor picnic tables, two fireplaces, and an outdoor grill. During summer months (May 15 to October 14), the Octagon's walls are removed for an open-air experience. Both shelters provide electricity for standard two-pronged appliances like coffee pots and crock pots, though space heaters and large appliances are prohibited. Large play fields and hiking trails are available near each shelter. Flush toilets are available year-round, and drinking water is accessible from May 1 to September 15. The park offers numerous attractions including Brandywine Falls, the historic Boston Store Visitor Center, the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad, and the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail.
