The Croom Tract Primitive Camp Zone Paddle In offers a remote backcountry camping experience on the Withlacoochee River. Located within Withlacoochee State Forest about 9 miles northeast of Brooksville, this camp zone is accessible only by water. Paddlers launch from the boat ramp at Silver Lake Recreation Complex and travel approximately 1.2 miles north on the Withlacoochee River to reach the designated camping area on the west bank, identified by yellow-banded trees. This is primitive camping in the truest sense. There is no potable water, no restrooms, and no established amenities, though some areas may have a fire ring or picnic table. Campers must be fully self-sufficient, bringing all water, food, and supplies. Pack-it-out waste management applies. The surrounding forest offers opportunities for wildlife viewing, bird watching, fishing, and stargazing. Before visiting, campers should contact WSF Dispatch at 352-797-4100 to confirm no prescribed burns are scheduled in the area. During hunting seasons, bright blaze orange clothing (500+ square inches) is strongly recommended. Chainsaw use is prohibited in all camping facilities.
