About

East Ashtabula Crossing Campground occupies a shaded hillside along Lake Ashtabula, a 5,200-acre reservoir created by the Baldhill Dam on the Sheyenne River in 1944. Managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, this 12-acre facility is one of the region's most popular camping destinations, drawing visitors to the scenic prairie pothole country of eastern North Dakota. The campground features 38 sites: 32 with 30/50-amp electric hookups and 6 walk-to tent sites. Facilities include flush toilets, showers, drinking water, a playground, and a picnic shelter. A dump station, fishing pier, boat ramp, and hiking trails are within walking distance. The swimming beach provides lake access for cooling off during summer months. Lake Ashtabula's name comes from a Native American word meaning "Fish River," fitting for waters supporting walleye, northern pike, white bass, yellow perch, and black bullhead. Spring and fall migrations bring white pelicans and waterfowl to the lake, while the surrounding 3,000 acres of Corps-managed habitat supports deer, wild turkey, and upland game birds.
