About

McDowell Campground sits on the shore of Lake McClellan within the 1,449-acre McClellan Creek National Grassland in Gray County, Texas. This developed Forest Service campground offers 15 sites with electric and water hookups as well as primitive camping options. Each site includes a picnic table and metal fire ring, with some featuring pedestal grills. Two vault toilets serve the campground, and potable drinking water is available on site. A dump station operates near the entrance. The campground is positioned away from the grassland's popular 10-mile ATV/UTV trail system, making it notably quieter than the nearby Lake McClellan Campground. Recreation opportunities include fishing, swimming, and picnicking when water levels permit. The lake is prone to drought conditions and has gone dry multiple times since 2000. McDowell Campground operates year-round on a first-come, first-served basis. Payment is accepted via cash or check at the pay station, or online through Recreation.gov. Day use is also available for visitors not camping overnight.
