Open

Open year-round on a first-come, first-served basis. Lake McClellan is currently dry and prone to drought conditions. Camping facilities remain operational regardless of lake water levels.

About

Lake McClellan Campground is located within the 1,449-acre McClellan Creek National Grassland in the Texas Panhandle, managed by the Cibola National Forest. The campground occupies a rolling shortgrass prairie landscape at 3,500 feet elevation, with 60 camping units ranging from primitive sites to those with water and electric hookups. The area centers around Lake McClellan, a reservoir that is prone to drought and low water conditions. The lake has gone dry multiple times since 2000 and campers should not count on water-based recreation being available. When water levels permit, fishing and non-motorized boating are available. A 10-mile OHV/ATV trail system originates from a trailhead outside the campground, though ATVs are prohibited within the campground itself. The recreation area accepts cash, check, and America the Beautiful passes. Day use is $5 per vehicle, with overnight camping at $10 per night or $15 for electric sites.
