About

The Annutteliga Hammock Unit Primitive Camp Zone offers backcountry camping in the Citrus Tract of Withlacoochee State Forest, located just under 10 miles northwest of Brooksville. This hike-in primitive zone is accessible via the Annutteliga Hammock Trailhead, with designated campsites marked by yellow bands on trees approximately one half-mile into the forest. The primitive camp zone provides a true backcountry experience with no water or restrooms available on-site, though select sites may include fire rings, picnic tables, and trash receptacles. The area is situated within sand hill habitat, characteristic of Florida's central ridge ecosystem. Campers can explore the surrounding Annutteliga Hammock Unit, which features open pine sand hills, dense woodlands, and diverse tree species including slash pine, longleaf pine, and various oaks. The forest supports habitat for bald eagles, fox squirrels, gopher tortoises, white-tailed deer, and wild turkeys. Recreational activities include hiking, bird watching, wildlife viewing, star gazing, wildflower viewing, and nature study. The area is part of a Wildlife Management Area, so visitors should wear blaze orange during hunting seasons and contact dispatch before outings to verify prescribed burning schedules.
