About

Pigot Bay Cabin sits on a tall bluff overlooking the steep-sided bay, surrounded by dense evergreen forest with views of distant mountains and glaciers. The 16x16 foot A-frame structure includes a main floor and loft with wooden bunks for six, a table with benches, and an oil drip (kerosene) stove for heat. A composting toilet is provided, along with a small gravel campfire ring outside. The cabin lies within the Nellie Juan-College Fiord Wilderness Study Area, making it exceptionally remote. Black bears, bald eagles, mountain goats, harbor seals, sea otters, and occasionally orcas or humpback whales can be spotted in the area. Kayaking along the Port Wells coast, fishing for pink salmon and halibut, shrimping, and berry picking are popular activities. Visitors must bring all supplies including drinking water, water treatment, kerosene fuel (1-2 gallons per day), sleeping bags, cook stove, toilet paper, and food. All trash must be packed out. Access requires advance planning with float plane or boat operators from Whittier, Anchorage, or Cordova.

Directions

Not accessible via road. Located on the southwest shore near the head of Pigot Bay, northeast of Whittier. Access by float plane is approximately 40 minutes from Anchorage or 60 minutes from Cordova. By boat, it is an 18-mile trip from Whittier. The cabin is reached via a short trail from the beach. Check local tide reports for ideal arrival and departure times.
