About
Pigot Bay Cabin is a 16x16-foot A-frame cabin situated on a tall bluff at the edge of a dense evergreen forest, offering sweeping views over Pigot Bay to the mountains and glaciers of Prince William Sound. The cabin sleeps up to 6 people with wooden bunks on the main floor and loft, and includes a table with benches, a kerosene oil drip stove (guests must bring fuel), fire extinguisher, and broom. A composting outhouse with a separating toilet seat is located nearby. This remote location is not accessible by road. Float plane access takes 40 minutes from Anchorage or 60 minutes from Cordova. By boat, it's an 18-mile journey from Whittier, with a trail and staircase from the beach to the cabin. Guests must bring their own drinking water, cooking stove, cookware, bedding, sleeping pads, lanterns, trash bags, and toilet paper. The bay's steep-sided topography limits hiking, but kayaking opportunities abound along the coast of Port Wells. Fishing is productive for pink salmon in late July and early August in freshwater streams and the bay. Saltwater fishing for halibut and rockfish is available near Pigot Bay and the western shore of Esther Island. The area also offers shrimping and butter clam digging on gravel beaches. Wildlife viewing is excellent, with frequent sightings of black bears, bald eagles, waterfowl, mountain goats on cliffs, and marine mammals including harbor seals, sea otters, sea lions, and occasionally orcas and humpback whales. Berry picking is available in season.
Directions
Not accessible by road. Located on the southwest shore near the head of Pigot Bay, northeast of Whittier. Access by float plane is a 40-minute trip from Anchorage or 60-minute trip from Cordova. By boat, it is 18 miles from Whittier. Cabin is reached via staircase from the beach. Check local tide tables before arrival and departure.
