About

Coeur d'Alene Campground is located on the southeastern shore of Melvern Lake in the Flint Hills of Kansas, operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The campground provides direct access to the lake's nearly 7,000 acres of water along the upper reaches of the Marais des Cygnes River Valley. Boating and swimming are popular activities, and anglers fish for walleye, crappie, channel and flathead catfish, black bass, white bass, striped bass, and smallmouth bass. The campground features 60 campsites with varying levels of hookups. Sites include fire rings and picnic tables. The campground offers shower buildings, vault toilets, and flush toilets. The rolling hills on the south side of the lake are somewhat wooded, though trees and shade are sparse within the campground itself, reflecting the Flint Hills' tallgrass prairie landscape of big bluestem, switchgrass, and Indian grass. Two trails connect from the campground: the Breakwater Trail and the 4-mile Tall Grass Heritage Trail, which links Coeur d'Alene Campground to Arrow Rock Campground. The 18,000 acres of land surrounding Melvern Lake provide extensive hunting opportunities for deer, quail, turkey, ducks, rabbits, and squirrels.
