About

Clear Creek Campground sits in the Verde Valley of the Lower Sonoran Desert at 3,200 feet elevation, part of the diverse Coconino National Forest. The campground is positioned along the banks of the fresh, chilly Clear Creek near the base of Cactus Mountain, creating a desert oasis that attracts abundant wildlife. The climate features hot summer days and mild winters typical of the arid Sonoran landscape. The campground offers 18 family campsites spread across a grassy, flat area with shade provided by surrounding cottonwood trees. Thirteen sites are reservable through Recreation.gov, while five sites operate as first-come-first-served. An additional group site accommodates up to 80 people with parking for 15-20 RVs or motorhomes. All sites are non-electric. Recreational opportunities center around the creek and natural surroundings. Anglers can fish for cool-water species including smallmouth bass and green sunfish. Birdwatchers commonly spot colorful songbirds, hawks, and occasionally bald eagles. The area supports diverse wildlife including black bears, elk, turkey, deer, and bison. Nearby attractions include Montezuma Castle National Monument, a 1,000-year-old cliff dwelling, and Montezuma Well. The campground is conveniently located 7 miles southeast of Camp Verde, accessible via State Route 260.

Directions

From Interstate 17, take Exit 287 for AZ-260 toward Cottonwood/Payson. Turn right onto AZ-260 and follow for approximately 8 miles. Turn north on Forest Road 626 to the campground, about 0.5 miles down FR 626.
