With hunting season underway, the National Forests in Mississippi is reminding all forest visitors to exercise caution and safety when visiting a national forest. Hunting is a safe, recreational sport. Some visitors, however, are sometimes surprised when they meet hunters on the forest.

Scenic Choctaw Lake Campground surrounds 100-acre Choctaw Lake in the Tombigbee National Forest of northeastern Mississippi. The recreation area offers a comprehensive range of outdoor activities including camping, fishing, boating, swimming, hiking, and mountain biking. Anglers can fish for largemouth bass, bream, catfish, and crappie from the shore, boats, or an accessible fishing pier. The campground features 20 campsites with electric and water hookups, alongside a day-use area with 35 picnic sites and three picnic pavilions. Modern facilities include two bath houses with flush toilets and showers, two boat ramps, and a swimming beach. An accessible walking trail circles the lake for leisurely strolls, while a moderate 3-mile trail departs from the campground for more adventurous hikers. Choctaw Lake Recreation Area also serves as the trailhead for the Noxubee Hills mountain bike trail, a 26-mile moderate-to-experienced route popular with both hikers and bikers. The campground is unstaffed with a self-pay fee station at the entrance. Located near the Natchez Trace Parkway and just 5 miles south of Ackerman, the area provides a peaceful retreat with opportunities to observe diverse birds and wildlife.

Directions

From Ackerman, travel 2.5 miles south on Highway 15. Turn left onto Choctaw Lake Road and travel 1 mile east to the main entrance.
