About
Bay Furnace Campground is located on the south shores of Lake Superior within the Hiawatha National Forest, near Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. The campground sits in the village of Christmas, about 3 miles west of Munising on M-28, across from the Kewadin Casino. Visitors can enjoy spectacular sunrises, sunsets, and occasional northern lights displays over Lake Superior. Some sites overlook the lake while others are nestled near Furnace Creek amid forests of deciduous trees. The campground offers 50 standard non-electric sites for tent and RV camping. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring with grill. Accessible vault toilets, drinking water, a dump station, and trash collection are available. A day-use picnic area is also on site. A short accessible interpretive trail encircles the ruins of a historic blast furnace where pig iron was made between 1870 and 1877. Popular activities include fishing Lake Superior by boat (ramps available in Munising and AuTrain), visiting Grand Island via a 10-minute ferry ride for hiking and mountain biking, and taking boat excursions to view the stunning natural rock formations. The campground is centrally located to numerous waterfalls and other Upper Peninsula attractions.
