About
Grand Island National Recreation Area is a pristine island campground located in Lake Superior, approximately half a mile from Munising, Michigan. The 19 individual campsites and 2 group sites are accessible only by hiking, biking, or boating, creating a true backcountry experience. Each site is equipped with picnic tables, fire rings, vault toilets, and bear lockers or poles. Some sites have drinking water available. The island features breathtaking 300-foot sandstone cliffs overlooking Lake Superior, white sand beaches, deep hardwood forests, and inland lakes. A 23-mile perimeter trail circles the island, with additional interior trails connecting to lakes and ponds. Visitors can enjoy mountain biking, hiking, swimming, kayaking, fishing, hunting, and ice climbing. Access to the island is via the Grand Island Ferry Service from Memorial Day through Columbus Day, or by private watercraft year-round. During the off-season, ferry service is unavailable, and travel across the ice is not recommended. The island is home to black bears, and proper food storage is mandatory. All trash must be packed out, and firewood can be collected from dead and down wood. Generators and rock climbing are prohibited on the island.
