About
Cayuse Horse Camp sits in the Cascade Mountain foothills within Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, serving as a premier destination for equestrians exploring the backcountry. The campground features 11 single sites and 3 double sites, each paired with a corral in a common area equipped with water troughs. Single sites accommodate up to 3 horses and double sites up to 4 horses, with a strict requirement that horses remain in corrals (no high-lining or hobbles permitted). The facility is exclusively for recreationists accompanied by stock animals including horses, mules, goats, or llamas.
The campground provides access to extensive trail systems through rugged peaks, alpine lakes, and forested terrain. Equestrians can connect to the Pacific Crest Trail, one of America's premier National Scenic Trails that traverses from Mexico to Canada. Each campsite includes picnic tables, fire rings with grills, and ample parking for vehicles and trailers, though the facility cannot accommodate newer, larger horse trailers. Drinking water is available from a hand pump, and vault toilets serve the campground.
The surrounding Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest features dramatic elevation changes from below 1,000 feet to over 9,000 feet, encompassing glaciated alpine peaks, old growth valleys, and diverse wildlife habitat. The campground opens seasonally after snow recedes, typically in late May, and operates through fall. Located 19 miles north of Cle Elum on Highway 903, the unstaffed facility offers both reservable and first-come, first-served sites. A manure collection area is provided, and owners must clean up after their animals.
Directions
From Cle Elum, take State Highway 903 north approximately 19 miles to the end of the paved road. The campground entrance is on the right before the Old Guard Station.
