Kachess

Closed — Closed for the winter season. The campground typically operates from late spring through early fall, with exact dates varying by year and snow conditions.

About

Kachess Campground is set in dense old-growth conifer forest along the forested northwest shore of Kachess Lake in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest. Considered one of the most beautiful sites in the Cle Elum Ranger District, the 92-acre facility offers 150 campsites that accommodate both tent and RV camping, including 106 reservable single family sites, a group site, and first-come, first-served sites. The campground is surrounded by high mountains and towering peaks, providing stunning alpine scenery. The campground features a motorized boat launch, non-motorized boat launch, swimming area, and picnic facilities. Kachess Lake is a reservoir that provides irrigation water for south-central Washington, so water levels vary throughout the summer season, which can affect boat launch access by mid-August. Anglers enjoy fishing for rainbow trout, cutthroat trout, and kokanee salmon from boat or shoreline, though Box Canyon Creek is closed to fishing for two miles upstream from its mouth. Kachess serves as an excellent base camp for day hikers and backpackers. The Kachess Lake Trail offers a short, easy loop near the lake, while numerous other trails provide access to the surrounding backcountry. The spectacular Pacific Crest Trail can be accessed near the campground, offering world-class hiking through the Cascade Range. The surrounding undeveloped wilderness supports diverse wildlife including deer, porcupine, native fish, and migratory birds.
