About
Camp Russell Campground is located within Curt Gowdy State Park, a 3,395-acre recreation area situated in the scenic foothills of the Laramie Mountains along Happy Jack Road between Cheyenne and Laramie, Wyoming. The campground provides water and electric hookups for RVs, with a dump station available on site. Named after legendary sportscaster Curt Gowdy, the park was established in 1971 and attracts over 500,000 visitors annually. The park features three reservoirs: Granite, Crystal, and North Crow. Granite Reservoir offers excellent rainbow trout and kokanee salmon fishing along with water sports opportunities. Crystal Reservoir, the smallest of the three, has shoreline fishing and allows boating with a 15 horsepower limit. The park is renowned for its 50 miles of IMBA-certified mountain bike trails, excellent hiking opportunities, and diverse wildlife viewing. Additional amenities include an archery range, visitor center with interpretive displays, and the historic Hynds Lodge listed on the National Register. The campground's location provides convenient access to both Interstate 80 and Interstate 25, making it an ideal base camp for exploring southeastern Wyoming's outdoor recreation opportunities. The varied landscape includes low-lying meadows, gently rolling hills, and massive granite formations.
