About

Torreya State Park Campground sits high atop bluffs rising more than 150 feet above the Apalachicola River, providing some of the most dramatic and unusual scenery in Florida. Developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, this historic park offers 30 shaded campsites equipped with electric and water hookups. The campground features flush restrooms with showers, and unique lodging options including Florida's only state park yurt and a cracker cabin. The park is named for the extremely rare Florida Torreya tree, one of the world's rarest and oldest known tree species that grows only on these bluffs. With diverse natural communities ranging from river swamps to high pinelands, steep ravines to elevated plateaus reaching 300 feet at Logan Hill, Torreya offers 16 miles of some of Florida's most challenging hiking trails. The varied terrain and hardwood forests provide exceptional birding with over 100 species documented, and spectacular fall color displays uncommon in Florida. Beyond camping, visitors can tour the historic 1840s Gregory House, a plantation home dismantled and reconstructed by CCC workers, explore Civil War-era Confederate cannon emplacements, and fish the productive Apalachicola River. The park also offers primitive camping at three Rock Bluff locations for adventurous backpackers seeking riverside wilderness experiences. With its dramatic topography, rare ecosystems, and rich history, Torreya provides a mountain-like experience unique in the Sunshine State.
