About

Bolar Mountain Recreation Area sits on the northern end of Lake Moomaw, a 2,530-acre reservoir on the Jackson River in the George Washington & Jefferson National Forest. The recreation area includes four distinct campground loops: Sugar Ridge, Campground 1, Campground 2, and Campground 3. Premium sites throughout the campgrounds offer lake views and direct water access. Most electric sites are located in Campground 1, with additional electric options in Campground 2 and 3. Each campsite includes a picnic table, lantern post, and fire ring. Modern amenities include flush toilets, hot showers, potable water taps throughout, and dump stations at Campground 1 and 2. Camp hosts are available to assist campers. A group picnic area is also available for reservation. Lake Moomaw offers excellent recreation opportunities with an average depth of 80 feet and 43 miles of wooded shoreline. Anglers fish for brown and rainbow trout, bass, and crappie. The Bolar Flat Marina provides a boat ramp and dock with boat slips for boating, water skiing, and canoeing. Eleven miles of hiking trails lead to scenic overlooks including Islands Overlook Spur and Grouse Point Overlook. For a more primitive experience, visitors can hike or boat to Greenwood Point for dispersed camping. The area has little to no cell service.

Directions

From Covington, take U.S. Route 220 north to State Highway 39 and turn left. Take Highway 39 to State Highway 600 (Bolars Draft Road) and turn left. After about 7.5 miles, turn right on Twin Ridge Drive for all campgrounds. Note: GPS often routes vehicles via Richardson Gorge Road and Jackson River Turnpike, which is not recommended, especially when towing, due to narrow dirt roads with steep soft edges.
