About
Buckhorn Creek Campground is an Army Corps of Engineers facility located on the banks of Lake O' the Pines in the Ark-La-Tex region of east Texas. The campground features 57 RV campsites with water and electric hookups, plus 38 non-electric tent campsites equipped with tent pads, picnic tables, fire rings, and lantern poles. Each section of the park includes restrooms with showers, and trash receptacles are distributed throughout. Additional amenities include a boat ramp with courtesy dock, playground, and sewer dump station. Lake O' the Pines spans approximately 18,700 acres of water and 9,000 acres of land across five counties. Created by the construction of Ferrell's Bridge Dam on Big Cypress Bayou, the lake was originally built for flood control in the Red River Basin and has evolved into a popular recreation destination. Anglers can fish for largemouth, spotted, and white bass, along with crappie, catfish, and sunfish from boats or along the shoreline and below the dam at Big Cypress Bayou. Boating, water sports, and wildlife viewing are popular activities, with bald eagle sightings common in fall and winter. Hunting for white-tailed deer, waterfowl, and small game is available on nearby public lands. The nearby historic towns of Jefferson and Marshall offer additional attractions, and Texas Wildflower Trail routes wind through the surrounding area.
Directions
From Jefferson, TX, travel 3.8 miles northwest on Highway 49. Turn left onto FM 729 and continue for 3.5 miles, then turn left again onto FM 726. Travel 2.5 miles. The park entrance is on the right.
