About
Martin Dies Jr. State Park is located on B.A. Steinhagen Reservoir in deep East Texas, where the Neches and Angelina rivers converge to create wild and diverse habitats on the edge of the Big Thicket. The park spans multiple units in Jasper and Tyler counties, leased from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Originally opened as Dam B State Park in 1965, it was renamed to honor State Senator Martin Dies Jr. The park offers over 200 campsites spread across the Hen House and Walnut Ridge areas, with the majority featuring water and electric hookups (30 amp or 50 amp). Many sites are positioned directly next to the lake or sloughs. In addition to camping, visitors can rent screened shelters and cabins. The park features mixed pine and hardwood forest habitat and is located on the southern migration route of many bird species, making it excellent for birding. Recreation opportunities include paddling on the reservoir and rivers, fishing, swimming, hiking, biking, and geocaching. The park offers ranger programs, nature hikes, and hands-on activities at the Nature Center. Nearby attractions include the Angelina National Forest to the north and Big Thicket National Preserve to the south. The park is open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. and operates year-round, though reservations are highly recommended as the park often reaches capacity.
