About
Blacksmith Fork Guard Station offers a unique opportunity to experience Forest Service history in the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest. Constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1934 as part of the New Deal Program, this small green and white cabin was originally part of a network of ranger stations spaced a day's horseback ride apart. The cabin sits at 5,400 feet elevation on the bank of the Left Hand Fork of the Blacksmith Fork River, surrounded by box elder and oak trees with Douglas fir covering the steep canyon walls behind. The cabin sleeps five people inside on bunk beds with mattresses. Up to four tents are permitted outside, and there's space for one small travel trailer (max 30 feet) in the gravel driveway. Indoor amenities include a wood-burning stove for heat, propane stove and refrigerator, lights, and all cooking utensils and cleaning supplies. A shared vault toilet is located along the Forest Service road. There is no potable water on site; the nearest source is Shenoah Picnic Area approximately 3 miles away. Outdoor features include a fire ring for campfires, picnic tables, horse stalls and corrals, a clothesline, and a horseshoe pit. The Blacksmith Fork River offers fishing opportunities. The cabin is less than one mile from Richards Hollow Trailhead and Friendship Campground, with extensive hiking, biking, horseback riding, and OHV trails throughout the area. Hardware Ranch Wildlife Management Area is about 5 miles southeast.
