At 8,475 feet in elevation, Black Canyon Campground is situated in a mixed forest of pine, aspen and fir trees, providing a scenic mountain getaway just 8 miles from Santa Fe. The campground offers 36 sites including single and double-family units, with some designated walk-to tent sites and a few first-come, first-served options. Most sites are accessible and each comes equipped with a table and fire ring with grill. The campground serves as an excellent base for exploring the surrounding Santa Fe National Forest. A pleasant 1.5-mile loop trail winds around the campground and into the forest, while numerous additional trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding are located nearby. The Pecos Wilderness, accessible 8 miles from the campground, offers extensive trail systems leading to majestic peaks through valleys, canyons and forested groves. Highway 475 provides access to additional recreation areas including hiking and biking trails and picnic areas both above and below the campground. The facility is adjacent to Hyde Memorial State Park, which provides a dump station for campers. During winter months, the area transforms into a destination for both Nordic and alpine skiing. The campground's high elevation provides cool summer weather and warm days, making it a popular escape from desert heat.
