About
Black Canyon Campground is one of the most popular and well-appointed campgrounds in the Espanola Ranger District of Santa Fe National Forest. Located at 8,475 feet elevation just 7 miles northeast of Santa Fe via Hyde Park Road (State Route 475), it provides a cool mountain retreat from desert heat with a pleasant mix of pine, aspen, and fir trees offering both sun and shade. The campground has 36 sites for cars and RVs, including single-family sites, double-family sites, and walk-to tent-only sites. Most sites are accessible. Each site features a picnic table and campfire ring with grill. Accessible vault toilets are provided throughout. A few sites operate first-come, first-served while most can be reserved through Recreation.gov. Recreation opportunities abound. A 1.5-mile hiking trail loops around the campground and into the surrounding forest. The Pecos Wilderness is accessible 8 miles from the campground, offering trails to peaks, valleys, and forested groves. Additional hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding trails are nearby along Highway 475.
