About
Holy Ghost Group Area sits high in Holy Ghost Canyon within the Santa Fe National Forest, at the gateway to the Pecos Wilderness in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of New Mexico. The group campground is located behind a locked gate at the far end of the regular Holy Ghost Campground, offering privacy for gatherings of up to 40 people. The site features a covered ramada, large communal fire pit, large grill, picnic tables, and a vault toilet with bear-proof trash bins. The campground is nestled in a lush mixed conifer forest of ponderosa pine and fir where aspen trees flourish, with Holy Ghost Creek flowing alongside. During summer, vibrant wildflowers blanket the area. Holy Ghost Trail #283 begins at the campground and runs 4.2 miles along the creek, connecting with Winsor Trail #254 to access a 350-mile network of trails within the Pecos Wilderness, including routes to Skyline Trail and four beautiful alpine lakes: Katherine, Stewart, Johnson, and Spirit Lake. Holy Ghost Creek supports rainbow and brown trout and is stocked regularly by New Mexico Game and Fish. The narrow, winding access road (Forest Road 122) features one-lane sections with pull-outs and is not suitable for large trailers or RVs. The campground is located 16 miles north of Pecos via Highway 63 and Forest Road 122, approximately 46 miles from Santa Fe.
Directions
From Santa Fe, take I-25 east approximately 18 miles to the Glorieta/Pecos Exit. Take NM Highway 50 to Pecos, approximately 5 miles. The group campground is located behind the locked gate at the very end of the campground.
