About
Big Tesuque Campground is a walk-in campground situated along New Mexico Highway 475, also known as the Santa Fe Scenic Byway, approximately 12 miles from downtown Santa Fe. The campground features 10 small camping units intended for tent camping, with picnic tables and fire grills at each site. Vault toilets are located in the parking area, but there is no potable water or campground host on-site. The campground sits within a scenic area of Santa Fe National Forest characterized by large stands of aspen trees, making it especially popular during the fall color season. The elevation and mountain setting provide a cool escape from lower elevations during summer months. North Fork Tesuque Creek runs through the area, adding to the scenic appeal. Recreation opportunities abound along NM 475, both above and below the campground. Hikers and bikers can access numerous trails in the area, and the road continues up to Santa Fe Ski Basin for alpine skiing in winter. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are popular winter activities throughout the area. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservation system and no fees.
Directions
From downtown Santa Fe, take Bishop's Lodge Road to Artist Road, which becomes NM 475 (Hyde Park Road). Continue 12 miles to the campground.
