About

Pecos Canyon State Park, New Mexico's 35th state park, is a jewel near the Pecos Wilderness of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in north central New Mexico. Just a short drive from Santa Fe and north of the Village of Pecos, this high-elevation forested park offers prime mountain camping at elevations ranging from 7,628 feet to 8,196 feet. The park provides world-class trout fishing opportunities on the Pecos River and its tributaries, surrounded by the Santa Fe National Forest. The park features 33 primitive campsites distributed across three campground loops: Terrero, Mora, and Bert Clancy. Each campsite accommodates up to 7 people with varying equipment lengths from 19 to 50 feet. The campground operates first-come, first-served during the off-season, while some loops require reservations during peak season. Facilities include vault toilets, fire rings, and parking. The park currently has no running water, electricity hookups, or sewer connections. Stage I fire restrictions may be in effect, limiting campfires to designated grills and stoves in developed camp and picnic grounds. Visitors can enjoy fishing, hiking, wildlife viewing, birding, and picnicking in this newly created state park that is still under development. A group shelter is also available for reservation. The park offers access to surrounding wilderness areas and serves as a gateway to exploring the Pecos Wilderness and Santa Fe National Forest.
