About
New Mexico's 35th state park, Pecos Canyon sits at the gateway to the Pecos Wilderness in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Located just a short drive from Santa Fe and north of the Village of Pecos, this high-elevation park (7,628-8,196 feet) is surrounded by Santa Fe National Forest and offers prime mountain camping with world-class trout fishing on the Pecos River and its tributaries. The park has 30 primitive campsites spread across three camping areas: Bert Clancy (9 sites), Terrero (8 sites), and Mora (11 sites, currently closed for construction through summer 2027). Each site includes a fire ring and parking. Vault toilets are available, but campers must bring their own drinking water as no potable water is provided. The park also features a group shelter (Jamie Koch) that accommodates up to 80 people. Reservations are available through ReserveAmerica up to 6 months in advance, though some walk-up sites are also available. Dispersed camping is not allowed within the park. Peak season runs April through October, with walk-in camping available November through March.
Directions
From Santa Fe, take I-25 north to Exit 299 (Glorieta/Pecos). Follow NM Highway 50 east to the Village of Pecos, then turn north onto NM Highway 63. The park entrance is approximately 13 miles north on Highway 63. Note: potholes present on NM Highway 63.
