About

Borrego Mesa Campground sits in the Española Ranger District of Santa Fe National Forest, serving as a rustic gateway to the northern Pecos Wilderness. This primitive facility caters primarily to equestrians and backpackers preparing for wilderness trips, offering eight spacious sites each equipped with a picnic table, firepit, and small corral capable of accommodating one or two horses. The campground's proximity to the Rio Medio Trailhead makes it an ideal overnight staging area before embarking into the backcountry. The campground is significantly less developed than most Forest Service facilities and receives light use. While there is ample space for RVs and trailers, visitors should come fully self-sufficient as no potable water is available, the vault toilet is not operational, there is no dump station, and no campground host is present. The setting appeals to those seeking solitude and a true backcountry experience, as well as residents from nearby communities who use it for picnicking. Access requires navigating Forest Roads 306 and 435 from State Road 503 through Nambe and Cundiyo, totaling approximately 29 miles from Pojoaque. The remote location and basic facilities make this an excellent choice for experienced campers and wilderness users who value access to trails over modern conveniences.

Directions

From Pojoaque, take State Road 503 north through Nambe and Cundiyo. Just past the turn-off to Santa Cruz Lake, turn right on Forest Road 306. After 9 miles, turn right on Forest Road 435 into Borrego Mesa Campground.
