About
Panchuela Campground is nestled at the edge of the Pecos Wilderness at over 8,300 feet in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The campground features six walk-in sites, three of which are three-sided shelters equipped with fireplaces and picnic tables. The shelters provide a rustic camping experience with protection from the elements while maintaining an open-air connection to nature. Panchuela Creek flows gracefully along the eastern side of the campground, with four of the six sites positioned right along the creek banks. The campsites are surrounded by mountain views, mixed conifer forests, and aspen groves that turn brilliant gold in the fall. Wildlife is abundant, including deer, elk, various songbirds, raptors, and occasional black bears. The campground serves as a perfect base camp for exploring the Pecos Wilderness trail system, with the Panchuela Trailhead providing easy access to extensive hiking opportunities. Fishing is available along Panchuela Creek and the nearby Pecos River. All sites are walk-in only, with parking available in a lot just a short walk from the campsites. Hand-pumped water spigots and vault toilets are located at the parking area.
Directions
From the town of Pecos, head north on NM 63 for 19 miles. Make a slight left onto Windsor Road and stay on it for 0.2 miles, then make a right onto Panchuela Road and follow it for 1.5 miles to arrive at the parking area. Panchuela Road is a single lane road with pull-outs.
