Black Canyon Campground offers a primitive boat-in camping experience on Bighorn Lake within the Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area. Located five lake miles from the Ok-A-Beh boat ramp at dayboard 5, this remote campground provides 17 tent sites in a backcountry setting accessible only by watercraft. The campground operates year-round on a first-come, first-served basis with no camping fees or reservation system. Amenities are minimal and seasonal: vault toilets are available during peak season (typically Memorial Day through Labor Day), and bear-proof food storage lockers are provided at each site. Courtesy docks are installed seasonally from Memorial Day to Labor Day to facilitate boat access. During winter months, the campground remains open weather permitting but has no facilities. Campers must be self-sufficient as no water is available on-site. The campground occasionally closes due to aggressive bear activity resulting from improper food storage by visitors. Standard regulations include a 14-day stay limit within any 28-day period, quiet hours from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM, and generator use restricted to 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Firewood collection is prohibited within the park, and pets must be leashed at all times. The primitive nature and boat-access requirement make this campground best suited for experienced campers seeking solitude on Bighorn Lake.
