Birch Creek Campground

Open

Open but significantly impacted by flood damage. An intense precipitation event washed out many roads, leaving eroded gaps as deep as 3.5 feet. The BLM urges visitors to exercise caution as the site has significantly changed. The area remains accessible to the public.

About

Birch Creek Campground is a free Bureau of Land Management campground situated along Birch Creek in the high desert of eastern Idaho. The campground includes approximately 25 developed campsites with picnic tables, fire rings, and restrooms. For those seeking more solitude, large undeveloped camping areas without picnic tables or fire rings are available south of the middle access point. The campground is popular among anglers, offering easy access to Birch Creek where brook and rainbow trout are abundant, with some brown trout also present. The location serves as an excellent base camp for exploring the nearby Caribou-Targhee National Forest. At the main entrance, visitors can learn about the tragic history of the Nez Perce at an interpretive stop on the Nez Perce National Historic Trail. Four group sites are available for reservation at $35 per night, accommodating groups ranging from 20-30 people up to 100+ people. Group reservations must be made at least 7 days in advance through the Upper Snake Field Office. Individual camping is free with a 14-day stay limit.
