About

Big Sandy Campground sits at 9,100 feet elevation in the Bridger-Teton National Forest, positioned at the trailhead leading into the heart of the Bridger Wilderness. The campground offers 4 standard sites in the main loop and an additional site near the Stock Trailhead for visitors with horses. Located along Big Sandy Creek at the north end of Big Sandy Opening, this primitive facility is roughly 45 miles and over an hour's drive from Pinedale. As a primitive campground, Big Sandy has no potable water, and visitors must pack out all trash. Vault toilets are available. Proper food storage is required due to bear activity in the area. Pets are allowed but must be leashed within the developed sites, and no livestock is permitted in the campground itself. Equestrians should use the corrals at the trailhead. The campground provides access to exceptional backcountry opportunities including backpacking, day hiking, fishing in mountain streams, rock climbing, wildlife viewing, and photography. The 14-day stay limit applies, with quiet hours from 10pm to 6am.

Directions

From Pinedale, head south on US-191 for about 12 miles, then turn left on WY-353 and drive approximately 15.5 miles where it becomes Big Sandy-Elkhorn Road/CR-118. Continue 12 miles, turn left onto Lander Cutoff Road/CR-132, follow for 7 miles, then turn left onto Big Sandy Opening Road/FS-370850 for 9.7 miles. Turn right at the fork; the campground is at the end of the road. Total: approximately 45 miles, 1 hour 12 minutes from Pinedale.
