About

Big Oak Hunter Camp is a specialized primitive camping facility in the Talladega National Forest's Shoal Creek Ranger District, serving as the only designated hunting area for physically disabled hunters in the forest. The camp provides access to a 1,700-acre hunting unit within the larger Choccolocco Wildlife Management Area in Cleburne County. This free-to-use camp offers basic amenities including vault toilet facilities but no potable water, requiring campers to bring their own. The primitive setting provides an authentic backcountry hunting experience while accommodating the needs of physically disabled hunters. All hunters utilizing this area must possess proper certification as physically disabled through the Alabama Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries, along with required state hunting permits and WMA permits. The campground is accessed via Highway 78 east from Heflin, turning onto County Road 66 for 1.5 miles, then onto Forest Service Road 548 for approximately 1.75 miles to the campground entrance. The facility is situated within the scenic southern Appalachian Mountains, offering opportunities for wildlife viewing and experiencing Alabama's national forest lands.
