About

Big John's Flat dispersed camping area sits at 10,200 feet elevation on the Beaver Ranger District of Fishlake National Forest, just south of the Tushar Mountain range. The area is characterized by expansive meadows surrounded by stands of Engelmann spruce, aspen, and fir. Three separate vault toilets are located roughly one mile apart along Forest Road 123, providing basic facilities for dispersed campers. During summer months, the area is heavily used for ATV riding on designated roads and trails, mountain biking, hiking, and viewing late-summer wildflowers. All motorized travel is restricted to designated routes; driving on meadows is strictly prohibited to prevent erosion and protect delicate meadow plants. In winter, the area transforms into a destination for snowmobiling and cross-country skiing enthusiasts. Campers can stay up to 16 consecutive days in a dispersed area, after which they must move at least 5 road miles away. Access is via FR-123, a narrow dirt road where AWD or 4-wheel drive vehicles are recommended. No water or trash services are available, and campers must pack out all waste following Leave No Trace principles.

Directions

From Beaver, travel east on UT-153 for approximately 16 miles. Turn left onto FR-123 and continue 3.3 miles to Big John's Flat. From Junction, travel 24 miles east on UT-153, turn right onto FR-123, and travel 3.6 miles north. AWD or 4-wheel drive recommended.
