About
Big Flat is an established dispersed camping area located on the Beaver Ranger District of Fishlake National Forest, approximately 22 miles east of Beaver, Utah near Puffer Lake. The area is characterized by a large meadow encompassed by Engelmann spruce, aspen, and fir trees, offering spectacular views of the Tushar Mountain Range. This popular year-round recreational destination accommodates groups of all sizes with numerous cleared camping spots around the meadow and forest edge. The area provides direct access to the Paiute ATV trail and offers diverse recreational opportunities including ATV riding on designated routes, bird watching, wildlife viewing, and nearby fishing. Winter activities such as snowmobiling and cross-country skiing are also popular. Three vault toilets are strategically located throughout the area: at Timid Springs on FR-514, at the Skyline Trailhead, and at the Buck Ridge turnoff. Access is via State Road 153, which is paved and plowed in winter for the first 20 miles from Beaver. The final two miles to Big Flat are on gravel road that is not plowed during winter, requiring snowmobiles or skis for winter access. Campers must stay on designated roads and existing cleared areas to protect the delicate meadow ecosystem. Groups larger than 75 persons require a free permit, and camping is limited to 16 days per 30-day period at this location.
Directions
From Beaver, travel east on State Road 153 for approximately 20 miles. This paved section is plowed during winter. Continue on gravel road for another two miles to reach Big Flat. The gravel road is not plowed during winter. From Junction, travel west 6 miles on paved Highway 153, then approximately 11 miles on dirt road to reach Big Flat.
