About

Big Horn Campground at The Elbow is a primitive campground within Nevada's Walker River State Recreation Area, situated along the fabled Elbow section of the East Fork Walker River. This stretch of water is legendary among fly fishermen for its trophy brown and rainbow trout, and the campground provides direct access to this pristine fishery. The setting is rustic and undeveloped, offering a quiet escape along the river. The campground operates on a first-come-first-served basis with no reservations accepted. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring, with vault toilet facilities nearby. There is no potable water, hookups, or dump station, so campers must bring their own water and be prepared for a primitive experience. The park is open year-round, though the access road is a county-maintained dirt road that may be affected by weather conditions. To reach the campground from Wellington on Highway 208, travel south on the Wellington Cutoff to Highway 338. Continue south approximately 23.5 miles, then turn east on Sweetwater Road at the sign for The Elbow. The campground is about 7 miles down this dirt road.
