About

Alum Creek Campground, situated in Mineral County within the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, was a primitive campground that has since been washed out by flash floods. The formal campground no longer exists, and the area now offers only dispersed camping opportunities at 2-3 pullouts along the access road. The surrounding desert terrain features sparse vegetation typical of the high desert environment. Access to the area is challenging and requires a high-clearance vehicle. Trailers over 12 feet are strongly discouraged due to the rough road conditions and extremely tight turnaround at the end of the road. There are no developed amenities, cell coverage, or services. Campers must be fully self-sufficient and prepared for primitive backcountry conditions. The location sits at approximately 4,800 feet elevation in the Wassuk Range foothills. Summer temperatures reach the 90s while winter lows can drop into the 20s. Nearby Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park offers a worthy side trip to see fossils of ancient marine reptiles.

Directions

From Hawthorne, Nevada, travel west into the Wassuk Range toward Alum Creek Canyon. The access road requires a high-clearance vehicle. Not suitable for trailers over 12 feet due to rough road and tight turnaround.
