About
Buckeye Campground provides a quiet camping experience at 7,000 feet elevation along Buckeye Creek in the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. The campground features 68 campsites shaded by Jeffrey and Lodgepole pines, offering a peaceful setting for tent and small vehicle camping. Each site includes a picnic table and campfire ring.
The location serves as an excellent base for exploring the nearby Hoover Wilderness, with hiking trails following Buckeye Creek into the wilderness and Eagle Creek toward the flanks of Eagle Mountain. The famous Buckeye hot springs, maintained at approximately 140°F, is just east of the campground. The spring flows over a rock overhang, creating a cave-like pool area that attracts visitors year-round. Fishing in Buckeye Creek offers an uncrowded alternative to more popular waters in the region.
Black bears are common in the area, and all food must be stored in approved bear-proof containers. The campground operates seasonally from late May through late September, depending on weather and road conditions. Firewood is available for purchase from the camp host, and a free California Camp Fire Permit issued by CalFire is required for all campfires, barbecues, and portable stove use.
