About

Big Elk Campground sits on a hillside at 5,700 feet elevation along Big Elk Creek, about 55 miles east of Idaho Falls. The campground is nestled among aspens and Douglas fir trees with sagebrush and summer wildflowers dotting the landscape. Individual campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis, while three group sites can be reserved. Big Elk Creek offers excellent fishing for cutthroat trout and occasional Kokanee salmon. A small boat ramp on-site provides access for canoes, kayaks, and small fishing boats, though launching depends on reservoir levels. The Big Elk Creek Trail begins at the campground and meanders up a beautiful canyon, popular for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. Palisades Reservoir lies across Highway 26, offering additional boating, water skiing, and fishing opportunities. The Snake River and Swan Valley provide more fishing, rafting, and trail access. Nearby Palisades Creek Trail leads to Upper Palisades Lake, and Fall Creek Falls is 20 miles away with extensive trail networks.

Directions

From Idaho Falls, travel approximately 56 miles east on Highway 26 to Palisades Dam. Continue 6 miles east on Highway 26, then turn left onto Forest Road 262 (Big Elk Creek Road) and travel 2 miles to the campground.
