Calamity

Closed — Closed for the season. Operates late May through early September with reservations available via Recreation.gov. After the main season closes, the campground is open first-come, first-served with no fee, no toilets, and no water. Currently tent camping only due to Bear Creek Road washout.

About

Calamity Campground is situated along the Snake River drainage at the north end of Palisades Reservoir, approximately 55 miles east of Idaho Falls, Idaho. At an elevation of 5,700 feet, the campground occupies a hillside location offering scenic views of the reservoir from many of its 40 single sites and 1 double site, spread across three loops. The area is partially shaded by a mixed forest of lodgepole pine, spruce, fir, aspen, and maple trees, with summer wildflowers adding color to the landscape. Palisades Reservoir is the main attraction, offering excellent opportunities for boating, water skiing, swimming, and canoeing. The on-site boat ramp and large parking area provide convenient water access. Fishing is very popular here, with wild and stocked cutthroat trout as the predominant species, along with kokanee salmon, brown trout, and Mackinaw trout. Shore and lake fishing are both productive options. The Palisades Creek Trail begins nearby, providing hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders access to beautiful Upper Palisades Lake and expansive views of Swan Valley. Additional recreation opportunities in the surrounding area include the Big Elk Creek Trail at nearby Big Elk Campground, rafting and canoeing on the Snake River, and extensive trail networks for hiking, biking, horseback riding, and ATV use in the Fall Creek area.

Directions

From Idaho Falls, travel on Highway 26 for approximately 50 miles. Turn right off Highway 26 just before ascending the grade to the top of Palisades Dam and go 0.25 miles. Turn right, cross the river, and follow signs to the campground. Total distance is approximately 5 miles. Note: Bear Creek Road is currently washed out; access is via bypass road for tent camping only.
