Hydrologic Outlook issued July 20 at 10:32AM MDT by NWS Grand Junction CO
ESFGJT Anomalous moisture has become established across portions of eastern Utah and western Colorado. Scattered thunderstorms capable of producing heavy rain are expected this afternoon and early evening. Rainfall rates of 1-2 inches per hour will be possible with the stronger storms. These rates could lead to flash flooding and debris flows especially over steep terrain and recent burn scars. Also, rain over the past several days has lead to saturated soils, which increase the chances for excessive runoff. As a reminder: Keep an eye on our forecasts through the end of the week and stay tuned for updated hydrology alerts if visiting or if you reside below vulnerable terrain to flash flooding and/or debris flows. Storms across the west develop quickly, leaving little room for lead time in flashy terrain.
About
Big Bend Group Sites provides group camping along one of Utah's most scenic stretches of the Colorado River, about 8 miles from Moab on Highway 128. Three distinct sites accommodate groups of varying sizes: Site A holds up to 40 people, Site B up to 20, and Site C up to 30. Sites A and B are located within the main Big Bend Recreation Area along the river, offering shade from cottonwood trees and direct river access. Site C sits across Highway 128 in a small side canyon, providing a more secluded setting without river access but with equally impressive canyon views. The campground serves as an excellent base for exploring southeastern Utah's outdoor recreation. Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park, and Dead Horse Point State Park are all nearby. The Colorado River's daily section offers family-friendly rafting and kayaking. Mountain biking, rock climbing, and scenic drives abound in the area. The La Sal Mountain Loop Road provides cooler temperatures during hot summer months. Facilities are basic but functional: fire rings with grates, picnic tables, shade shelters, vault toilets, and trash removal. No potable water, showers, electricity, dump stations, or hookups are available. RV and trailer parking is limited. Quiet hours are 10 PM to 6 AM, generators are permitted 8 AM to 8 PM only, and amplified music is prohibited.
Directions
From Moab, drive north to the junction with Highway 128. Turn right and travel 8 miles along the river road. Group sites A and B are in the main campground. Site C is up the dirt road directly across from the main campground.
