Following this will be a slight decrease in snow rates Tuesday before a second wave of moisture is expected for late Tuesday night. Into Wednesday precip rates should then start to diminish. The rain/snow line will be wavering south of the Icy Strait area through this entire time period. Please stay tuned to future updates on this impactful storm. * WHAT...Heavy snow. Additional snow accumulations of 17 to 22 inches. * WHERE...Glacier Bay and City and Borough of Juneau. * WHEN...Until noon AKST Wednesday. * IMPACTS...Travel will be very difficult. About
Berners Bay Cabin is located on a saltwater beach near the mouth of the Antler River, offering panoramic views of the Antler and Berners River deltas and Lions Head Mountain. The 13' x 14' Pan Abode cabin features a large deck, one double bunk, three single bunks sleeping 5, a table, counter, and oil stove for heat. The site includes an outhouse and mooring buoy approximately 200 feet offshore. Berners Bay is a spectacular destination for saltwater fishing, crabbing, sea kayaking, beachcombing, and wildlife viewing. Each spring, spawning herring and euchalon attract massive concentrations of bald eagles, brown and black bears, harbor seals, humpback whales, and endangered Steller sea lions. Moose, wolves, deer, mountain goats, and waterfowl inhabit the surrounding old-growth hemlock and Sitka spruce forests, saltwater estuaries, freshwater marshes, and cottonwood floodplains. A primitive one-mile trail from the woodshed leads to an ocean overlook beneath a large waterfall. Access is by boat, kayak, or float plane only from Echo Cove boat launch at mile 40 Glacier Highway, 8 miles south of the cabin. Winter road maintenance is intermittent on the last 6-8 miles of Glacier Highway. Kayakers and boaters must consult tide charts, as parts of the bay become extremely shallow at low tide.
