About

Berners Bay Cabin sits on a saltwater beach near the mouth of the Antler River, offering sweeping views of the Antler and Berners River deltas and Lions Head Mountain. The 13x14 ft pan-abode structure sleeps five on three single bunks and one double bunk, with a table, benches, cold storage box, and oil stove for heat. An outhouse, campfire ring, and mooring buoy are provided. Access is by float plane, boat, or kayak only from the Echo Cove boat launch at mile 40 Glacier Highway, approximately 8 miles south. The bay becomes extremely shallow at low tide, so consult tide charts before any trip. A dinghy or 450-foot shore tie rope is advised for anchoring to the mooring buoy, which is about 200 feet from the high tide mark. Winter road maintenance on the last 6-8 miles of Glacier Highway is intermittent. Berners Bay is renowned for spring wildlife spectacles when spawning herring and eulachon draw massive gatherings of bald eagles, brown and black bears, harbor seals, humpback whales, and Steller sea lions. Summer brings blueberry picking, saltwater fishing, crabbing, sea kayaking, and beachcombing. A primitive one-mile trail from the woodshed leads to an ocean overlook beneath a large waterfall.

Directions

Located 37 miles northwest of Juneau on the shore of Berners Bay, 8 miles north from the Echo Cove boat launch at mile 40 Glacier Highway. Access by float plane, boat, or kayak only. Mooring buoy available about 200 feet from the high tide mark. Consult tide charts as bay becomes extremely shallow at low tide. Winter road maintenance is intermittent on the last 6-8 miles of Glacier Highway.
