About

Bear Creek Lake State Park's Shelter Loop offers a unique covered camping experience in the heart of Virginia's Cumberland State Forest, less than an hour west of Richmond. The park centers on a scenic 40-acre lake featuring a swimming beach, fishing pier, and boat rentals during the warmer months. The shelter area provides a more rustic experience compared to the park's traditional campground loops. Amenities include a large pedestal grill and picnic tables, with restrooms and a drinking fountain located nearby. While the shelters lack electricity, campers have access to the park's bathhouses with showers and the centrally located dump station. Beyond camping, visitors can explore extensive trail systems including access to the 14-mile Cumberland Multi-use Trail for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. The park also features an archery range, playgrounds, and picnic areas. Pets are welcome on leash throughout the campground, though not on the swimming beach.

Directions

From US Route 60, go west on Route 622 and south on Route 629 to the park entrance. The park is approximately 4.5 miles northwest of the town of Cumberland.
