Bear Creek Lake State Park Black Oak Campground

About

Black Oak Campground is part of Bear Creek Lake State Park, a 329-acre park nestled in the heart of Cumberland State Forest in central Virginia. Located less than an hour west of Richmond, the park centers around a scenic 40-acre lake built in 1938. Black Oak Loop offers 16 campsites with electric and water hookups, split between eight sites for equipment up to 20 feet and eight sites for equipment up to 35 feet in combined length of camper and tow vehicle. All sites feature metal fire rings, picnic tables, and access to modern bathhouses with flush toilets and showers. The campground provides convenient access to the park's extensive recreational offerings, including a boat launch, fishing pier, swimming beach with snack bar, and archery range. Anglers can target largemouth bass, crappie, bream, and channel catfish in the lake. Beyond the park boundaries, the adjacent Cumberland State Forest offers the 15.7-mile Cumberland Multi-use Trail for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. The park also features several shorter hiking trails and connects to the Willis River Trail system. Campers enjoy modern amenities including ice sales at the park office, firewood available for purchase, and Wi-Fi access in the campground. The park's boat rental facility operates from Memorial Day through Labor Day, offering canoes, kayaks, paddleboards, pedal boats, and rowboats. A lakeside snack bar serves refreshments during the summer season. The campground typically closes in early November for the annual Lights at the Lake event setup and reopens in spring.
