Barren River Lake Tailwater Picnic Shelter is a group shelter facility managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Louisville District. Located directly below Barren River Lake Dam at the outlet works, the shelter sits within the Tailwater Recreation Area alongside the Tailwater Campground. The shelter is equipped with electricity and is available for group reservations through Recreation.gov. The Tailwater area is renowned for its fishing opportunities, particularly for catfish and hybrid striped bass in the stilling basin discharge area. Downstream, anglers can catch various species of bass and sunfish. The surrounding landscape features dramatic views of high cliffs and wooded hills across the river. Wildlife viewing is excellent, with bald eagles frequently spotted perched near the stilling basin waiting for fish. A permanent wildlife blind provides additional opportunities for observing local fauna. The shelter is part of the broader Tailwater Recreation Area, which includes nearby amenities such as picnic sites, playground, and basketball court at the stilling basin recreation area. The location offers a peaceful retreat in the surrounding woods while providing convenient access to both water-based recreation and the adjacent Tailwater Campground facilities.

Directions

From Glasgow, KY: Take 31-E south for 4 miles; turn right on 252, which will cross the dam in 8 miles. The Tailwater entrance road is at the south end of the dam. Follow signs into the recreation area.
