The Tailwater Campground offers 48 sites along the Barren River, positioned just below Barren River Dam in Allen County, Kentucky. This Army Corps of Engineers campground maintains a quieter atmosphere compared to busier lakeside recreation areas while remaining close enough for easy lake access. Beautiful views of high cliffs and hills line the opposite riverbank, and bald eagles are frequently spotted perched above the stilling basin waiting for fish. Fishing is the primary draw here, with the tailwaters producing catfish, hybrid striped bass, largemouth and smallmouth bass, and various sunfish species. The Steen Bergen Nature Trail offers hiking and wildlife viewing opportunities, with chances to spot great horned owls, woodpeckers, migrating songbirds, chipmunks, belted kingfishers, green herons, and river otters. A permanent wildlife blind enhances viewing opportunities. On-site recreation includes an amphitheater, playground, beach volleyball court, horseshoe pit, and open field for activities. The campground annually hosts the Barren River Lake Scout Celebration each August. Day trips to the National Corvette Museum, Kentucky Down Under, Diamond Caverns, and Mammoth Cave National Park (one hour north) are easily accessible.

Directions

From Glasgow, KY: Take 31-E south for 4 miles; turn right on KY-252, which crosses the dam in 8 miles. The Tailwater entrance road is at the south end of the dam. Follow signs into recreation area. Approximately 19 miles from Bowling Green, KY.
