About

Avalanche Campground is located in one of the most popular sections of Glacier National Park west of the Continental Divide, approximately 15.7 miles from the West entrance via Going-to-the-Sun Road. The campground accommodates both tent and RV campers across 87 reservable sites, with 50 sites specifically designed to handle vehicle lengths up to 26 feet or truck and trailer combinations up to 26 feet total. Sites are relatively spread apart, providing privacy for campers. The campground offers seasonal amenities including flush toilets with running water, potable water access, and bear-proof food storage lockers located near restroom facilities. Each campsite includes a picnic table and fire ring, though firewood collection within the campground is prohibited. Given the area's heavy grizzly and black bear activity, all food and attractants must be secured when not in immediate use. Avalanche serves as an excellent base for exploring the area's spectacular scenery. Two popular day hikes in the vicinity offer opportunities for wildlife viewing and experiencing old-growth cedar forests. The nearby Trail of the Cedars is a 0.7-mile accessible boardwalk trail through ancient cedars. All reservations are made through Recreation.gov on a rolling 6-month advance basis, with some sites available 4 days in advance.
