About

Avalanche Campground occupies a prime location along Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park, surrounded by towering old-growth cedars west of the Continental Divide. The campground serves as a base for two of the park's most popular day hikes: the accessible Trail of the Cedars boardwalk loop and the trail to Avalanche Lake. Wildlife sightings and birding opportunities are common throughout the area. The campground accommodates both tent and RV campers, though vehicle restrictions apply. Only 50 of the 87 sites can fit vehicles up to 26 feet in length. Additionally, vehicles longer than 21 feet or wider than 8 feet including mirrors are prohibited on the section of Going-to-the-Sun Road between Sun Point and Avalanche Campground, limiting access for larger rigs approaching from the east. All sites must be reserved in advance through Recreation.gov. Reservations open on a 6-month rolling basis, with some sites available for booking up to 4 days in advance. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring, with bear-proof food storage lockers located near restroom facilities. Firewood collection is prohibited; campers must purchase certified heat-treated firewood.

Directions

From West Glacier: Enter through the West Entrance and drive approximately 15.7 miles east on Going-to-the-Sun Road. From St. Mary: Enter through the St. Mary Entrance and drive approximately 34 miles west on Going-to-the-Sun Road. Note that vehicles longer than 21 feet or wider than 8 feet including mirrors are prohibited between Sun Point and Avalanche Campground.
