About
Tillis Hill Equestrian Campground sits within the Tillis Hill Recreation Area in the 50,000-acre Citrus Tract of Withlacoochee State Forest. The campground caters primarily to equestrian enthusiasts with 36 covered open stalls, two dedicated equestrian trails, and parking areas that accommodate trucks with horse trailers. The facility offers 37 campsites with electric and water hookups, each equipped with a picnic table and fire ring with grate or grill. Two bathhouses and a dump station serve the campground. Non-equestrians are welcome to reserve campsites and the pavilion with dining hall. The surrounding Withlacoochee State Forest spans over 165,000 acres across five counties and features the Withlacoochee River, Little Withlacoochee River, and Jumper Creek, all designated Outstanding Florida Waters. The forest showcases diverse ecosystems including open pine sand hills, dense woodlands, and canopied trails. Wildlife includes bald eagles, fox squirrels, gopher tortoises, white-tailed deer, and wild turkeys. The forest was ranked number one on the World Wildlife Fund's "10 Coolest Places You've Never Seen in North America" in 1999. The Citrus Tract is a Wildlife Management Area where seasonal hunting is permitted outside campground boundaries.
