About
Mutual Mine Campground sits within the Mutual Mine Recreation Area in the 50,000-acre Citrus Tract of Withlacoochee State Forest, less than 30 minutes south of Inverness. The campground's 13 campsites are positioned alongside a man-made lake created from an old phosphate mine pit, offering a peaceful setting for fishing and relaxation. Sites range from 25 to 40 feet in driveway length and include water access, picnic tables, and fire rings with grates or grills. A centrally located facility provides restrooms and showers. The surrounding Withlacoochee State Forest encompasses over 165,000 acres across five counties and features the Withlacoochee River, designated as an Outstanding Florida Water. The landscape includes open pine sand hills, dense woodlands, and hardwood hammocks supporting diverse wildlife including bald eagles, fox squirrels, gopher tortoises, white-tailed deer, and wild turkeys. The forest offers extensive trail systems for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. The campground is managed by the Florida Forest Service and accessible via Pleasant Grove Road and Forest Road 16. Due to the remote location within an active Wildlife Management Area, hunters may be present during hunting seasons, and visitors are advised to wear blaze orange when hiking. The area is also used for prescribed burns, so checking with forest dispatch before arrival is recommended. This is a camping-only facility; day use is not permitted except for registered campers.
