About

Alpine Campground holds the distinction of being the highest campground in Mount Hood National Forest, situated near the headwaters of the Salmon River on Oregon's iconic volcano. The high-elevation setting means snow can persist well into summer, and the campground operates on a shortened seasonal schedule as a result. The location provides excellent access to Timberline Lodge and the extensive trail network in the upper mountain area, including hiking and mountain biking opportunities. The town of Government Camp lies below, offering supplies and services. The campground is primitive with vault toilets and potable water from a hand pump, but no hookups or showers. Sites are first-come, first-served with no advance reservations. Vehicle length is restricted to 16 feet maximum due to short spurs, making this campground unsuitable for RVs or large trailers. The setting rewards those seeking a quiet, high-alpine camping experience close to Mount Hood's alpine zone.

Directions

From Sandy, OR, travel east on Highway 26 past Government Camp to Forest Service Road 173. Follow 173 north to the campground.
