About

Acorn Woman Peak Lookout is a historic fire lookout constructed in 1942 and listed on the National Historic Site Registry. This L-4 style cabin sits atop Acorn Woman Peak in the rugged Siskiyou Mountains of the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest, offering visitors an unparalleled 360-degree view through glass windows on all sides. The lookout provides a truly primitive rental experience in a 14x14-foot one-room cabin designed for one or two people. From the lookout, guests are treated to expansive views of the Red Buttes Wilderness area, Acorn Woman Lake, and the Little Applegate Valley. To the north are far views of the Rogue Valley and Mt. McLaughlin, and to the east is Wagner Butte and Dutchman Peak. On clear days, visitors can see the rim of Crater Lake, Mt. Bailey, and Mt. Thielsen. Clear nights provide dazzling displays of stars and planets, making this an exceptional spot for stargazing and astrophotography. The cabin features a small wooden table and a working Osborne Firefinder on its center work table. Basic supplies include a broom, mop, fire extinguisher, and a small storage box with toilet paper, forest and ranger district maps, and information about the lookout. A primitive vault toilet is located nearby. Access to the lookout requires navigating a steep, winding road that may not be suitable for all vehicles, and unlocking a gated entrance with a combination provided upon reservation. The maximum stay is 5 consecutive nights, and the lookout is available for rent during the snow-free season.
